Life as we know it

Vision Boards & Mood Boards: How Can They Help?

Hi guys, Thank you for being patient, I know it has been a while. Apologies for that, but I have been in the process of shifting my blog from blogger to WordPress (self-hosted) which I think is the big step. Hope it helps me categorise posts and come up with new better content. So, hello 2020 again! While planning my posts and my goals for this year I stumbled upon mood boards, which are similar to vision boards with a little difference. I surprisingly realised how amazing these are to help you with your work and tasks, especially in the creative sphere.

What are these boards?

Vision boards of course I was introduced to when I was doing image consulting. They are used quite a bit in the fashion industry while coming up with looks and trends for the season or for a collection. These are more like for your goals and purpose on a board visually, for the long run and what you would like to achieve from that. It is a great motivating factor and also helps you communicate your plan and vision to others in an appealing manner. Therefore, this is more goal focused in terms of the brand’s future.

Mood boards pretty much work in the same way and I have been using them for my content creation. They are great for new blog posts and am even using them at work for that matter for social media posts especially. It is nothing but a collage of your braninstorming, but visually. You can use images, design elements, texts ideas, swatches and other elements. It depends on what the project or industry you working with at that point in time. It delivers the look and feel of a product or thought that is to be conveyed.

Why are we talking about this?

So, why am I discussing this today? It is because since the time I have been into blogging and sorting life goals out, I have realised the importance of just having out thoughts and ideas right out there in front of us. It not only helps to co-ordinate all the ideas better and get everything in sync. This way you get to see the whole picture of where you are heading. Makes sense? Having ideas in tangible form helps you and others understand what you are trying to put across more easily.

If you are a creative person or working in the creative industry, these are a must. For instance, if you are in the advertising industry and working on a campaign, mood boards will help you understand the feel, ambience and the aesthetics that particular campaign will carry for the brand. On the other hand, the vision boards will help with goal setting for that particular brand and where you would want to reach, making the whole process mindful.

So how can they help? Let’s break them down into points to make it easier to understand.

1. Is a Transition Tool:

They act as a tool in between the initial thoughts and the final idea that is to be locked in. The ideas and thoughts keep getting refined over the process and these act like a great tool to visualise what you had in mind, where you are and how you would like to be in the end.

2. Creates a Foundation:

We humans like everything visual, we like to see things, colours, elements and they tend to stay in our minds for longer along with communicating better. Thus, these boards help to build a foundation for your thoughts in the best way possible.

3. Gives a Clear Vision:

When something is in front of you visually, it delivers a very clear image of what needs to be done. Not just for you but also those working with you as well. When the ideas are streamlined, it becomes easier for you to work towards making them into something that you envisioned.

4. Stimulates thinking:

One other important thing these activities bring out is they make you think about what exactly you want or are looking for and what needs to be focused on. They act like a stimuli for your thoughts and help you come up with better outcomes then it would otherwise have been.

5. Is fun to work on:

Other than all the professional/creative benefits, mood boards and vision boards are fun to make. Some fun never hurts anyone eh? They get you all fired up emotionally and inspire you to bring the best out, cause fun breeds creativity, doesn’t it?

Go Make Em’

Now that you understand its benefits, you must get to making them. Pinterest is a great platform to start, as it offers templates and lots of references. Other than that, you can also try Canva, Microsoft PPT or Photoshop as a start. So, why not try for your next tasks, campaigns or projects?

P.S. How do you guys like to plan your work? Also, how is Feb 2020 treating you, I hope there is something good awaits you every month this year! Until next time y’all <3
