While observing people and the world that I come across, there are a lot of thoughts and matter which I feel I need to write about and today’s topics is one of those and the findings are going to be discussed here. Sounds like proper research doesn’t it? you could probably call it subconscious R & D. This is not something new or groundbreaking and I am sure a lot of you have read about it or at least thought about it, but putting it out there in writing feels completely different. Also, just like everything else, not everyone might agree to what I have to say or express, but yeah here goes!
Personally I feel, this topic needs to be given more importance than it usually gets. Okay enough of the suspense; I mean to talk about sensitivity/insensitivity (I m not talking about skin sensitivity here, just saying :p, that’s a topic for some other time and those with it, I totally feel you guys). On a serious note, I am unable to decide, whether the world was more insensitive before or is it more now? I guess the issues, awareness and people change over time, so does the characteristics of sensitivity and its context (what do you guys think about this?), so it is definitely more confusing to figure out. There are lot of aspects of sensitivity when it comes to be it human emotions and that’s what we would be talking about today. Sensitivity/Insensitivity is different for different people, and that could be based on various factors like culture, upbringing, surroundings, their beliefs and many such. These help in shaping the way we are. Therefore, it is important to make sure more focus is given on compassion, respect, and awareness is instilled right from the beginnings; childhood insecurities sometimes do not leave way into adulthood. With people more aware, connected and global, the world calls for sensitivity now more than ever, be it towards people, cultures or issues.
As mentioned, it mostly depends on what sensitivity is to each and like a lot of things becomes subjective. But I’m just trying to put down here what I understand from it and what it means in today’s world. So first let me put out what I think sensitivity is. I think its about respecting and trying to understand someone’s feelings or a perspective, without making them feel uncomfortable in any way. Sounds like too much of a task or can’t help how others feel? Of course we can’t change what is not in our control, but we can change the way we approach it. Being considerate and aware of your surroundings and people can be help a great deal. I think it would be safe to say that some people are more sensitive than others for whatever reasons, could be due to their life experiences, surroundings or they are just wired that way. It also can be quite puzzling at times to figure out what triggers people or irks them in ways, everyone has pain points which we might not even know about and sensitivity in those times is what’s needed.
On the other hand, there are those who are indifferent to things around them, insensitive if I may call it; towards feelings, situations, worldly matters and everything basically. Do they purposely choose to be that way or did something happen that they become that way? I am sure they have their reasons (just trying to understand their point of view), the world is not always a kind place or they are just built that way. A lot of times people are just not aware of how to behave in a certain manner or what to say in certain situations and what effect it might have on those around. Additionally, there are other bunch of people with absolutely no conscious and are just the way they are, cuz hey who cares about the world right? Their constant urge to find flaws in others or belittle them, knowing it might be a sensitive issue is something I do not appreciate. I am sure we all have come across such people at some point of time.
I read somewhere recently that insensitive people are insecure and that kind of made a lot of sense to me, as I could literally relate certain people around me with this thought process. It is these kind of people that make everything about them, look at everyone as competition (even their friends/family), are emotionless and can be pretty shallow to be honest. While being self centered, these insensitive people do not even realize that people are being hurt or do not like it. However, sometimes their words might not directly say that, in those times – observe, trust the vibes, I am sure you would figure out yourself.
Anyhow, since we all realize that everyone is fighting a battle that we do not know of (expect a few who are by choice mean or oblivious to the world around), why not just be a little understanding and sensitive, on humanity grounds. At times, I am sure you would have even felt or thought it might be seen a good thing to be insensitive, in which case you would not be as affected by the world and might save you a lot of complications, but what is a life without emotion and empathy towards a fellow living being (not necessarily human)?!! And no I’m not saying we should understand someone’s point of view or their life or decisions, but the least we can do is be considerate. You never know what is important to people, and what is an issue that is close to them, so let’s just be a little aware of what we are saying or doing. That is all it takes.
P.S. in our daily lives we come across a lot of situations where we say a lot of things in some context without realizing, happens to all, even with me and I hope to work on it. Do let me know if I have missed out in any aspect on the topic. Also, I hope the posts are not getting too serious or preachy, there is something about human behavior and why we are the way we are, that just pulls me. What kind of posts would you like to read more and I would definitely work on them more. ️
